Three Great Restaurants in Charleston

August 15, 2011 - One Response

There are three restaurants that I highly recommend you going to if you are ever in Charleston, South Carolina, FIG(Food Is Good), Virginia’s on King and Magnolias.

FIG had the best appetizers of the three.  I recommend the Johns Island Tomato Tart Tatin and the Brown Shrimp Escabeche.  I loved the Brown Shrimip Escabeche.

Virginia’s on King was real southern family style food.  I recommend the Fried Chicken dinner,  fried okra and the creamed corn for your side dishes.  The creamed corn was delicious.

At Magnolias try the Down South Egg Roll and the Fried Green Tomatoes for your appetizers.  I had the Wild Caught Shrimp and Scallops for dinner.  It came with succotash, rice and a brandied lobster cream.  It was EXCELLENT!

You will definitely need to make a reservation for these restaurants.

I’m not an expert but I think these are the three best restaurants in Charleston.

This little food dude gives:

FIG- 4 Stars

Virginia on King- 4 Stars

Magnolias-4.5 Stars

Dinner with dad at Clare and Don’s Beach Shack

July 14, 2011 - Leave a Response

My grandpa Jon had a favorite restaurant he loved going to in Falls Church.  My dad and I were in the area last night so we decided to check it out and I’m so glad we did.

When you walk into Clare and Don’s Beach Shack you feel like you are at a restaurant on the beach.  There are paintings of palm trees and beach scenes on a fence that separate the outside seating from the indoor seating.  We decided to eat outside.  We enjoyed being outside but since the tables are along a busy highway the buses and traffic did get a little loud.

For appetizers we ordered the Whole Heap O’ Shrimp and the Lake Alice Gator tails.  I had never had alligator tails before and I really liked them.  They tasted like chicken.  The shrimp were a little spicy and I liked them a lot.  I liked the alligator tails better.

For our entrees I had the Shrimp Jambalaya-it was delicious.  It had rice, okra, veggies, sausage and shrimp.  It was spicy so I had to sip a lot of iced tea but I like spice and I finished all of it.

This is my new favorite restaurant. If you love seafood you will love this place.  If you don’t like seafood don’t worry there are plenty of other options.

This little food dude gives Clare and Don’s Beach Shack 5 out of 5 stars.

Bar Americain

July 1, 2010 - 4 Responses

I went to New York City for a vacation with my family this past week.  The one thing I really wanted to do was to eat at Bobby Flay’s Bar Americain. I always watch Throwdown with Bobby Flay, The Next Food Network Star and the Iron Chef. He seems like a really nice guy and he cooks up really good food. I wanted to go to Bar Americain because each episode of  Throwdown with Bobby Flay shows him on the balcony of his restaurant and I thought it looked like a cool place to have dinner, and I was right!

We walked into the restaurant and I was excited.  We sat down at the table and I could tell it was the fanciest restaurant I have ever reviewed. Our waiter was named John and he was nice and an excellent waiter. In fact all of the waiters were very helpful. I ordered lemonade and the Plate of the Day, the Country Style Ribs with Bourbon Barbeque Sauce and the Tomato Corn Bread. After we ordered, John brought out the bread. Included in the basket was my favorite– corn bread. When I tasted the corn bread I wondered what was in it, so my mom asked one of the waiters and he went back and asked the chef and he immediately came back and shared the recipe with us.

We decided to take a picture on the balcony where Bobby Flay shoots the beginning of Throwdown. While we were there, we met one of the managers, Jason. Jason said that Bobby Flay was wonderful to work for. I was happy to hear that.

My ribs were very tender and easily came off the bone. The sauce was a little bit spicy and sweet. I loved the ribs!! The tomato corn bread was shaped like a mini muffin. You could absolutely taste the tomato and I liked the flavor it added to the corn bread. I also got the chance to try Bobby’s secret french fries. They were perfectly fried and they had a nice crisp texture. I thought they were amazing. My mom said they were the best french fries she ever tasted.

We decided to order a dessert. I got the Deep Dish Chocolate Cream Pie. It didn’t look like a regular slice of pie. It was in the shape of a circle. The crust was on the top and it was like a cookie. The chocolate was delicious and it tasted like a really good chocolate mousse.

Everyone who worked there was great. The food was the best I’ve ever had.

This place was so good I had to change my rating system.  This little food dude gives Bar Americain a perfect 10.

Coming in June my review of Bobby Flay’s Bar Americain

Seibel’s Restaurant

May 31, 2010 - 2 Responses

Sorry I haven’t been writing a lot lately.  I have been busy with school work.

This past weekend I went to my Grammy’s house in Maryland.  On Sunday we went to a really nice restaurant called Seibel’s for brunch.  When we sat down a very friendly waitress came to our table to take our order.  My Grammy ordered a breakfast sandwich.  It was an english muffin with canadian bacon and a fried egg.  I ordered the hearty breakfast with french toast, sausage, bacon, hash browns and 2 scrambled eggs.  I ate everything but I couldn’t finish the scramble eggs.

I really liked the flavor of the french toast it was very sweet.  The sausage was a little spicy but it was still good.  The hash browns were real potatoes and onions.  The onions added a really nice flavor.  I could tell that the hash browns were homemade.  The scrambled eggs were a little runny. They weren’t my favorite part of the breakfast.  But I still really liked the meal.

I had a very nice brunch with my Grammy. Seibel’s has fun games you can play for free.  My Grammy and I played checkers after we ate our brunch. They also have fun books that you can read while you wait.

This little food dude gives Seibel’s a 4 out of 5.

Seibel’s Restaurant is located in Burtonsville, Md and it has been there since 1939.  It used to be a dairy bar.

PS: Seibel’s makes great homemade milk shakes!

Carolina Brothers Pit BBQ

February 20, 2010 - One Response

My family and I have not been able to go out to eat in restaurants over the past couple of weeks because of all the snow.  I did get a chance to eat some barbeque from Carolina Brothers when my Dad brought it home for dinner one night.  I love barbeque so this was a special treat.   They give you lots food and a bag of potato rolls for your sandwiches.  I had the barbeque pork sandwich and coleslaw.  The  pork was delicious.  It was a little spicy but not too much.  When I eat barbeque sandwiches I like to put the coleslaw on top of the barbeque.  I liked the coleslaw because it is light and not too heavy and it tastes good with the pork.  My mom really likes their baked beans.

Carolina Brothers does not delivery so you have to go to the store in Old Ashburn to pick it up.   I think they have the best barbeque in town.  This little food dude gives Carolina Brothers BBQ 5 out of 5!

Mediterranean Breeze

January 10, 2010 - 3 Responses

After church my family and I went to Mediterranean Breeze in Ashburn for breakfast.  Adilio was our waiter and he was very nice.  When I told him about my blog he pulled it up on his phone right away.

The breakfast menu looked really good and there was lots to choose from.  I finally decided on the chocolate chip pancakes with a side of sausage. When my pancakes came out they looked really delicious.  There were three large pancakes with powdered sugar on top and two big sausages on the side.  The pancakes were cooked perfectly and the sausage was juicy and tasty.  I tried my mom’s and dad’s food too.  My dad ordered Eggs Benedict with gyro meat.  I didn’t think the gyro meat with the Eggs Benedict would be good together but I really liked it.  My mom got the Florentine.  It was an omelet with eggs, spinach and swiss cheese.  It was pretty good but it wasn’t my favorite, to much spinach. There was so much food I couldn’t finish all of my pancakes.  There is a kid’s menu that has smaller versions of the adult menu.

A waitress named Maddy came over to my table and told us that this was a family owned restaurant that has been in Ashburn for 6 years.  They have breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

This little food dude gives Mediterranean Breeze a 4 out of 5.  A good place to go for breakfast with your family.

Bonefish Grill, Ashburn, VA

December 16, 2009 - 6 Responses

Last Thursday night my family and I went to Bonefish Grill.  Our waiter was JR, he was very funny and had a good sense of humor.  I started with a Shirley Temple and Bang Bang Shrimp.  I have always liked the Bang Bang Shrimp it has a rich sauce and is spicy.  For dinner I had the special which was the Norwegian salmon topped with sautéed spinach, crispy bacon and creamy gorgonzola cheese.  I loved it!  The salmon was juicy and the flavor exploded in my mouth.  Corn salad and garlic mashed potatoes came on the side.  I liked the corn salad but I didn’t care for the mashed potatoes, they had too much garlic in them.  For dessert I shared the hot fudge macadamia nut brownie with whipped cream on top.  The dessert was really good.  It was full of chocolate and I really liked the vanilla ice cream with it.

JR, our waiter, was really funny.  We also liked Vincent who came over and made fun of JR.  Everyone who works at Bonefish is really nice!

Since for me it is all about the fish this little food dude gives Bonefish a 5 out of 5, amazing!

Forno Italian Oven & Grill

November 18, 2009 - 4 Responses

My family and I went to Forno Italian Oven & Grill in the Broadlands on Saturday night. When we sat down my sister wanted to play with pizza dough.  The really nice waitress told her she could actually make her own pizza!  I wanted to make my own pizza too.  I ordered pepperoni, spinach, sausage, cheese, and olives to put on my pizza.  The waitress brought out the pizza dough on a pizza tray with sauce and the toppings on the side. Putting together my pizza was one of the best times I have ever had at a restaurant.  The waitress took the pizzas and the chef baked them in a brick oven.  The pizza looked so good when it came out of the oven and it was delicious.  For dessert I recommend the chocolate truffle.  It had chocolate ice cream inside and it was covered with chocolate on the outside.  There were also strawberries on the plate.  I ate it all in about a minute and licked my plate clean.

One of the owners, Raimondo came over to our table.  He told us that the other owner and chef, Enzo Febbraro had cooked in the White House for President Bush and Clinton.  They also own other restaurants in Washington, DC.  Raimondo brought me back to meet chef Enzo Febbraro.  I told him that I had so much fun making my own pizza.  He asked me how many stars I would give his restaurant and I told him a 5+ out of 5. The chef told me he wanted me to try one of their real Italian dinners the next time I come.  I definitely can’t wait to go back.

This little food dude gives Forno a 5+ out of 5.
